They were also used for their meat and fur.

In the late 18th century, British merchants imported some of the bear-like dogs called “Chow Chow,” and the name stuck to the breed.

Chow Chows were first mentioned in a British book, Natural History and Antiquities of Selbourne, by naturalist Gilbert White in 1781. The book describes his neighbors bringing home a pair of Chow Chows from Canton (now Guangdong) and includes them in observations of country life.

CHOW CHOW HEALTH CONDITIONS

• Entropion

Entropion disease is a common ailment in dogs, especially in Chow Chows. The disease is a congenital condition in which the eyelid curls into the cornea, causing the eye to become painful, watery, and unable to see. A genetic mutation from parents can also cause the disease in offspring. Sometimes Chow Chow puppies are born with this disease.

• Hip Dysplasia

Hip dysplasia is a condition in dogs in which the hip bones become abnormally shaped and cause the hip joints to become loose and painful over time. The situation is common in dogs. The condition is typically detected through X-rays and can be managed with treatment, such as medications and physical therapy, to help reduce the pain and bring the dog’s quality of life back to normal.

CARE

If you have a Chow Chow puppy, you have a lot of responsibility for giving it the care, exercise, and attention it needs to live a long, happy life. This small dog breed requires a lot of care and grooming. They have very long hair, which requires a lot of attention; Chow Chows also have a very high shedding rate, which requires frequent brushing and combing. Brushing your Chow Chow dog’s coat regularly helps prevent mats and tangles. The slicker brush is best to remove dead hair and remove mats, or you can use a wide-tooth comb to detangle the coat.

Chow Chow dogs are athletic and active dogs that need regular exercise. If you’re considering getting a Chow Chow, it’s a good idea to know the amount of activity they require. A small amount of exercise each day can go a long way in keeping your Chow happy and healthy.

Chow Chow puppies are energetic and like to run and play to keep them healthy and relaxed. While Chow Chow adult dogs can be surprisingly active for their size, they still require regular exercise. Many Chow Chow dogs need at least one hour of vigorous exercise daily to keep them healthy and fit.

Chow Chow oral hygiene is one of the most important things you can do to ensure that your Chow Chow’s teeth stay healthy and strong. The Chow Chow dog has long been known to have a strong desire to chew on things that are not food. The best way to discourage your Chow Chow from chewing on things that are not food is to give them what they want: toys and bones designed to be chewy. Many chew toys are available for dogs, such as bully sticks and antlers, and toys that can be filled with kibble, such as Kongs.
