HISTORY

Experts believe the Siberian Husky originated among the Chukchi, a tribe of nomadic Siberians. Experts do not know much about the breed’s history, but DNA tests confirm their ancestry. The Chukchi people of Siberia used their dogs for transportation and treated them as family members. These dogs used to sleep with the children, providing them with warm and comfortable beds.

In 1908, they were brought to Alaska and were well-known for their work as sled Dogs. It is still used in the All-Alaska Sweepstakes, a 408-mile race run by a dog sled.

As the Soviet borders were closed in 1930, the last Siberian Husky was exported out of the country. The breed continued to be popular in North America. While they have changed a bit since their Siberian foundation dogs, Chukchi Sled Dogs still display the same traits that attract people to Siberians.

In 1938, the Siberian Club of America was founded. In 1930, the American Kennel Club and in 1939, the Canadian Kennel Club recognized the Siberian Husky dog breed.
