HISTORY

In the late 19th century, Louis Dobermann, a tax collector, lived in Apolda, Germany. To protect himself from the bandits while he made his rounds of collecting money, he trained dogs to assist and protect him.

When the town animal control officer, Mr. Dobermann, was on duty, he always took his dog with him for protection. Mr. Dobermann’sidea was to breed dogs that would make loyal companions and protectors. His experiments resulted in the creation of the early Doberman Pinscher.

The origins of the Doberman Pinscher are largely a mystery, but it is believed that the German Pinscher, Rottweiler, and Black and Tan terrier were used to create the breed. The Dobie was first introduced in 1876.

In 1894, when Dobermann died, the true history of the breed he helped develop also died with him. However, his contributions to creating the breed earned him the distinction of being remembered and honored as its creator.

After 1921, nearly all of the best Doberman Pinschers were brought to America. However, World War II again threatened the breed in Germany. This breed might not exist today if it weren’t for previous exports to America.

The Germans removed Pinscher from the dog’s name in the mid-1900s. And a few years later, the Britishers also removed the word Pinscher.
